Making a home safe for our parents doesn't require a total renovation. It’s about small, smart changes that prevent big accidents. Here is the "Safe Home" checklist:
-
Add "Hand-Holds": Install Grab Bars near the toilet and shower. Don't use towel racks for support they aren't built to hold body weight.
-
Stop the Slips: Use Anti-skid mats or spray a "non-slip" coating on floor tiles.
-
Seat Height: If the toilet is too low, add a Commode Raiser. It makes sitting and standing much easier on the knees.
-
Night Lights: Put Motion-sensor plug-in lights in the hallway and bathroom. They turn on automatically when someone walks by at night.
-
Brightness: Replace old, dim bulbs with bright LED lights. Aging eyes need much more light to see clearly.
-
Lose the Rugs: Small carpets and "doormats" are the #1 cause of trips. Remove them or tape them down firmly.
-
Hide the Wires: Use clips to keep phone chargers and TV wires off the floor and tucked against the wall.
-
The "Middle Shelf" Rule: Move daily items (medicine, tea, spectacles) to shelves between waist and chest height. No more reaching high or bending low.
-
Lever Handles: Swap round door knobs for Lever handles. They are much easier to open if you have joint pain or weak grip.
